Are My Low College Grades a Concern When Applying to a MBA Program?

During my undergraduate college years, I was anything but a stellar student. Unfortunately, it was a trend that continued in law school. After failing out of law school, I decided to take a breather from school and focused on working in Corporate America. But today, I believe that going to graduate business school will help me to launch a business venture.

At Oberlin College, I achieved a GPA of 2.49. Most people would be embarrassed to publish this in an article, but I am compelled to tell the truth. It was a difficult experience for me. To be honest, I lacked the writing skills to be successful at a prestigious institution, such as Oberlin College. And unfortunately, my grades told the story.

After Oberlin, I attended the University of Toledo College of Law for one year. It was an amazing experience to learn so much about the law; however, my grades were not good enough for me to stay beyond my first year. I would tell you my GPA in law school; unfortunately, I have never seen my final transcripts. Yes, I never saw all of my final grades. But, you probably want to know what went wrong. I was not a good writer. At the time, I was the king of comma splicing and poor transition within a paragraph.

Times have changed. Maturity has allowed me to become smarter and more focused. A few months after failing law school, I passed the Series 7 exam. It was a boost for my confidence. I really needed something positive to occur after failing out of law school. Since then, I have earned the HIAA designation and am currently taking LOMA classes, all of which are self-study.

My low grades in college and law school will not deter me from applying to top 25 MBA programs. As long as I score high on the GMAT, I believe that a compelling case can be made to accept me. I am bright, a good leader and the kind of person that will run several successful businesses. There is no limit to my imagination or ability!

Your blog is inspiring. I struggled in school as well. I graduated with a 2.4 GPA in college and a 2.5 GPA in law school. I didn't have a big problem with writing. I just wasn't prepared for the majors that I pursued in science.

Early in high school I took advanced courses in science and math. I was taking classes with juniors and seniors as a freshman. I had forgotten most of that stuff by the time college had began. I started out as a science major and it killed my GPA because I was always two steps behind everyone else. I had to brush up and learn advanced material at the same time. It was horrible and I don't wish that stress upon anyone. I studied hours just to have a shot at getting a C.

I don't know what happened in law school. In the beginning, I didn't understand how to properly apply the law to the facts. It was unnatural to write like that to me. In addition, I wasn't even sure how to identify the law at times. The use of case law was foreign and I liked statutes better. The teachers told us not to use study aids with black letter law and I was dumb enough to listen to them. You need something to let you know whether you're studying properly before the exam. Anyway, it's done and I passed the bar.

The toughest thing after graduation with those grades is job hunting. The grades prevented me from getting most internships, so I had limited chances to gain experience. Grades and experience are so important in getting some jobs. After law school, I started getting interviews for a change. I couldn't get anything after college but the economy wasn't great at the time either.

I thought about business school but I have had such bad experiences in college. I have my law degree and I am never going back to college. lol I don't mind learning but the classroom is not my friend. I do better studying independently and practicing.

Good luck with business school and I hope it works out for you.
